My professional career and more than 20 years of experience, have provided me with innovative perspectives and the uniquely combined skills of an attorney, a communicator, and a political strategist. I have vast experience designing strategic litigation (and the strategic use of the law); working with the judiciary; defending women’s rights, promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights; and learning from the global south.​

I have successfully worked with lawyers, public interest law groups, human rights movements, and social justice organizations supporting them in shaping their strategy based on a method developed and used over the last ten years in Latin America, Europe, and Africa. It involves facilitating them to (1) be conscious of the choices they make when thinking of and talking about the problem they want to address and the contribution they can provide towards its solution, (2) continuously map & analyze the context to identify threats and opportunities, (3) clearly define the target audiences and the most effective framing to foster mobilization, and (4) create a strategy that explores the use of legal, communications and political avenues to advance towards the goal. Not only does this methodology enable individuals and organizations to clarify and implement strategies to achieve the changes they are aiming for, but also builds capacity for future strategic work.

From 2004 to 2016 I had the privilege to partner up with Viviana Waisman to establish Women´s Link Worldwide from a two-people operation to a 25-staff international human rights organization that uses the power of the law to advance the rights of women and girls facing multiple inequalities and operating on three continents. These efforts started with our first case in which I constitutionally challenged the complete ban on abortion in Colombia and achieved a constitutional recognition of the right of women and girls to decide whether or not to interrupt a pregnancy under specific legal grounds.

From 2009 to 2018, I taught International Women´s Human Rights at the Summer Academy at the Washington College of Law at American University, in Washington D.C. Since 2016 I also teach Women’s Rights at the Berg Institute at Alfonso X University in Madrid and in 2018 I became a Scholar at the O´Neill Institute at Georgetown University in Washington.

Before 2004, I was a Global Public Service Law Fellow at New York University where I obtained my Master in Laws (LLM). Before that, I worked at the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York City and was a researcher at the Center for Socio-Legal Studies at Los Andes University in my hometown Bogota, where I obtained my law degree.
